Pixar Review: 'Finding Dory'

Hi everybody! Time for another Pixar Review! It's time to tackle Pixar's latest feature film which takes us back to the depths of the ocean of Finding Nemo and this time focusing on everyone's favorite blue tang Dory with the 2016 release, Finding Dory. Is it as good as the original or is this movie as pleasant as drowning? Let's review!

Story:
One year after the events of the original film, Dory is now living with Marlin and Nemo. But after going on a field trip with Nemo's class results in Dory to remember her past. Determined to find her parents, she travels to the coast of California where she discovers her past and learns to accept who she really is.

So I honestly thought that this would be a copy of Nemo because that's what the trailers made it look like. But honestly, it's only like that for certain scenes. For the most part, it does feel like it's own movie because of the film's presentation. Another thing that separates this from the original is that the original movie focused on the adventure and this one focuses on the backstory of it's main characters.

Even though this is another one of Andrew Stanton's amazing stories, it does come with some flaws, for example the first act is pretty weak compared to the rest of the movie, mainly because the first act borrows the most from Finding Nemo. There are some good jokes in there, but the movie doesn't really pick up until later. Also, the climax, without spoiling anything, is pretty out of place but is a pretty fun scene.

Dory's plot might borrow some things from its predecessor, but it's pretty interesting that will have you at the edge of your seat and maybe shed a tear.

Animation:
If you have been following the news stories that came out about the film, like I have, then you know that Finding Dory has some of Pixar's most complex work yet. One thing that the Pixar crew is really proud of is the animation of Hank who has been a challenge for the animators down in Emeryville. So is all this up to the hype that they are presenting?

I'm proud to say that this has some of the most amazing animation that you will probably see in the theater this year (along side both Walt Disney Animation Studios films from this year and Kubo and the Two Strings later on). The original film already had some of the best computer animation ever, even by today's standards, so basically for recreating the ocean world they basically just had to add more detail to an already beautiful world.

For the character animation, like the first film, they do a great job of conveying emotion through the sea creatures of the ocean. Most notably, Hank who is breath-taking to look at with all the ways he would camouflage and use squash and stretch. I almost which that the movie would star Hank just so I can see more of this amazing animation.

This is some of Pixar's best animation they have done, greatly combining detail and characterization.

Characters:
One of my favorite things from the first film were the memorable characters and this movie is a great opportunity to introduce some more. From whale sharks to giant killer squids this movie plans of introducing some of the aquatic creatures that weren't in the adventure to find Nemo.

Let's start with the characters that were in the first movie that come back. Let's start with Dory, since she is the main character. The Pixar team did a great job of giving what was just a simple side character into a fully developed main character. As for Marlin and Nemo, with them no longer in spotlight, they are a bit weaker. They don't have any main thing to do in the movie which is pretty sad because Marlin was a really great character. As for the rest of the returning characters, they don't do that much and are only there for a short roll. Also, stay tuned after the credits for a really clever cameo from a certain group of characters.

As for the new characters, there isn't that much of them. But of the ones we did get are really great. As for Destiny and Bailey, they are there for comic relief and for helping Dory along the way on her journey. Then there's Hank who is as fun a character as he is to look at. The problem is that he doesn't really have any backstory aside from hating the ocean because of something that happened. But aside from that, these are some great new characters.

Though not all of them have great character devolvement aside from the lead, they are a pretty great group of characters.

Final Rating and Thoughts:
Though the film has it's flaws this is a great movie and will stand up good against the original. It will probably not be as good as the original but this is a recommended movie and I did enjoy.

Story Rating: 9/10

Animation Rating: 10/10

Character Rating: 9/10

Final Rating: 9/10
